United States intelligence agencies have intercepted encrypted communications believed to have originated in Iran that could potentially signal instructions to covert operatives stationed outside the country.
A federal alert distributed to law enforcement agencies across the United States warns that the unusual transmission may have been designed as an operational signal intended for sleeper agents positioned internationally.
The alert is based on early signals analysis of a broadcast believed to have come from Iran. Intelligence officials say the transmission appeared shortly after the death of Iran’s long-time Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a military strike carried out by the United States and Israel on February 28.
Authorities say the message was heavily encrypted and transmitted across multiple countries through radio frequencies rather than digital networks such as the internet or cellular systems. This type of communication is sometimes used to deliver instructions to operatives who possess a specific decryption key while avoiding modern surveillance methods.
Investigators believe the signal may have been directed at clandestine recipients who are already positioned in other nations. These individuals could include covert operatives who remain inactive for long periods until receiving instructions.
According to the alert, intelligence analysts cannot yet determine the exact content of the intercepted transmission. However, officials say the sudden appearance of a new broadcast source capable of relaying encrypted messages internationally has raised concern among security agencies.
Law enforcement bodies have been instructed to increase awareness and monitoring of unusual radio frequency activity as a precaution.
Authorities emphasized that the alert does not point to a confirmed or immediate threat at any specific location. Instead, it serves as a warning to remain vigilant while intelligence specialists continue analysing the signal.
Security officials have long expressed concern that Iran could maintain networks of covert operatives outside its borders. The possibility of sleeper agents being activated has been a topic of discussion since the escalation of hostilities between Iran and Western allies.
The intercepted transmission has intensified those concerns, particularly because of its timing following the death of Iran’s top leader. Analysts believe any retaliatory actions from Tehran could involve unconventional tactics, including the use of covert operatives stationed abroad.
Investigations into the source, purpose, and intended recipients of the transmission remain ongoing.
