A motorcyclist who allegedly fled Police before attempting to hide among football spectators at a West Auckland sports ground is due to appear in court this week.
Police say the incident unfolded just after 6pm on Monday in the Huapai area, when officers conducting speed patrols observed a motorcycle allegedly travelling at 110km/h in an 80km/h zone on State Highway 16.
Auckland Motorways Manager Senior Sergeant Bill Russell said officers attempted to stop the rider, but the motorcycle failed to pull over.
“No pursuit was initiated, but the Police Eagle helicopter was able to quickly get overhead,” he said.
The helicopter crew tracked the rider to Huapai Domain, where he allegedly parked the motorcycle on a footpath and attempted to blend in with football fans watching a game.
Despite the attempted disguise, the rider was swiftly located and taken into custody.
Senior Sergeant Russell said Police remain focused on road safety and holding dangerous drivers and riders accountable.
“We are committed to keeping people safe on our roads and individuals who choose to drive or ride in a reckless or dangerous manner will be held to account,” he said.
A 32-year-old man has been charged with failing to stop and is scheduled to appear in Waitākere District Court on Friday.
